Rosekel Care is recruiting Personal Assistants to join a small, dedicated team supporting an 18-year-old young woman who lives at home with her family.
This is an opportunity to become part of a consistent team where you will really get to know the person you support, understand her communication and routines, and play an important part in helping her have meaningful, comfortable and enjoyable days.
Location: Finchampstead/Wokingham area
Hours: Full-time and part-time opportunities available
Weekday rate: £14.30 per hour
Weekend rate: £18.59 per hour
Enhanced Bank Holiday rate
Driving: Drivers preferred but not essential
About the young woman you will be supporting
She is a young woman with cerebral palsy and complex physical and healthcare needs. She is a wheelchair user, is unable to weight bear and requires support with all aspects of her daily living. She communicates non-verbally, so an important part of your role will be getting to know her as an individual and learning to recognise her facial expressions, vocalisations and other ways of communicating.
Consistency and familiarity are particularly important to her. We are looking for enthusiastic, engaging and positive people who can bring energy to her day while also recognising when she needs a calmer, reassuring approach.
Her days are structured around her individual routines, exercises, education and activities. She has a swimming pool at home which she enjoys using, so being confident and comfortable in the water would be beneficial.
She also participates in conductive education, and her PA team will work alongside her family and those involved in her support to maintain the approaches and routines that are important to her.
What will I be doing?
This is a varied role combining personal assistance with supporting complex healthcare needs.
You will support with personal care and continence care, positioning and repositioning, hoist-assisted transfers, skin integrity and pressure-area care, exercises, activities and postural management.
She receives her nutrition, hydration and medication through a PEG, so you will be trained to safely support her with PEG care and enteral feeding.
She has epilepsy, and her team need to be confident in recognising and responding appropriately to seizures, including following her emergency medication protocol when required. She also has an increased risk of aspiration and can experience difficulty managing her secretions, so her PAs need to be observant, recognise changes in her presentation and respond appropriately.
You will not be expected to arrive already knowing how to do all of this. Comprehensive training and competency assessment will be provided before you undertake healthcare tasks independently.
Who are we looking for?
For this role, personality is just as important as previous experience.
We are looking for someone who is:
- Enthusiastic, engaging and positive
- Calm, patient and reassuring when needed
- Reliable and committed to providing consistent support
- Comfortable and confident interacting with a young adult who communicates non-verbally
- Observant and able to recognise when something is different from usual
- Happy to get involved in activities, exercises and education
- Comfortable working closely with family members and as part of a 2:1 team
- Willing to learn established routines and approaches from the people who know her best
- Comfortable providing personal care with dignity and respect
- Willing to undertake training and competency assessments for her individual healthcare needs
- Confident in the water, or willing to become confident, as she enjoys using her swimming pool
- A driver would be preferred but is not essential
Previous experience of complex care, PEG feeding, epilepsy, moving and handling or supporting someone with cerebral palsy would be beneficial, but the right attitude, personality and willingness to learn are equally important.
Why join her team?
This isn't a series of short care calls. You will be joining a dedicated PA team, giving you the opportunity to build a genuine relationship with the young woman you support and understand what makes a good day for her.
We are looking for people who want to engage, participate and get involved, rather than simply complete care tasks.
If you are enthusiastic, dependable and would enjoy becoming part of a consistent team supporting a young woman to get the most from her everyday life, we would love to hear from you.
